La Ferme du Mont, Lower Rhone, France

La Ferme du Mont winery is located nor east of Avignon and Orange outside a small town called Valreas in the Southern Rhone, Fr. In addition to Cote du Rhone and Cote du Rhone Villages they produce wines from Vacqueyras, Gigondas and Chateaunerf du Pape.

The hot Mediterranean climate lends itself to full bodied whites made from Marsanne, White Grenache and Roussanne and predominantly red blends of Grenache Shiraz Mourvèdre.

The dry arid conditions makes the roots dig deep to find the water table and produces wines of concentration and fruit weight. The stone soil reflects light and head back onto the vines helps ripening and is ideal for hardy bush vines of Grenache.

These wines are generally fermented in large concreate vats, which helps to absorb the heat from the fermentation. As a rule the wines are kept away from oxygen and the fermentation normally takes a slow 4-5 days and gentle maceration. Producing bright fruit driven and elegant wines.

Run by the talented Stephane Vedeau, this is an up-and-coming estate of which readers need to take note. Across the board, the wines deliver fantastic quality and over-deliver; since 2007, they’ve been near the top of every vintage. In addition to superb Chateauneufs, don’t miss Vedeau’s Cotes du Rhones.
